A mood board is a tool used by designers to help them get a good idea of what their clients are looking for. Mood boards are collages of items such as photographs, sketches, clippings, fabric swatches and color samples. These boards can be actual or virtual. A mood board is used by many different types of designers such as those in fashion, game and interior design. they are used towards the beginning of the development to give and overall idea of what the game will look like at the end of the development in terms of art style and colour scheme.
Visual Planning
Visual planning is any form of planning that is expressed in a visual format in order to covey ideas of what the final product will look like. This helps not only the creator but also anybody working with the creator to share the same vision of what the result will be. Mood boards are forms of visual planning that are used early in the development process as they help to combine ideal aspects such as a colour scheme, target audience and the overall look of the product into a mindmap of images and diagrams. later in the development process, one may start making sketches of their initail ideas to make desighs of what the product, and any aspects of the product (in the case of a game, the characters) will look like once the product is finished. Storyboards are also popularly used in the visual planning process, especially when it comes to games, movies and books. They serve and a form of flowchart for the story or the events within the media being created. A form of visual development that may be made towards the end of the planning process is the making of presentations and posters used to pitch the initial idea to an employer.
Overall, the visual planning process is important because it helps the creator to see what works and what doesn't visually within their idea so that they may make changes and further development in order to make their idea better.
This is the moodboard that I created to show what my game will look like at the end of it's development. I wanted my game to have a cheery, lighthearted feel to it, similar to old nintendo games such as: Mother, Earthbound, Yoshi's island and animal crossing in order to appeal to younger children while also having the nostalgia factor due to it being in the style of games fron the SNES era.
Storyboards
A storyboard is a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a film or television production. They are used to show the chronological order of the events that may occour in your film, book or game and are used towards the middle of the development process before the actual game is made.
